Makaha and the Makahiki Games

This winter's 17th annual Quiksilver Makahiki was a big hit and it scored on multiple points. The event had perfect weather, waves, and a great turnout. This event is a very unique one because there is no other winter surfing grounds on Oahu that offer as much as Makaha for all of the different competitions. At X Games, Battle for Sponsors Is Also Fierce

The battle of the brands is never ending. Torah Bright who won a gold medal in snowboard halfpipe at the Vancouver Games after a series of concussions, is the face of the women's apparel brand Roxy. Last week, Roxy, sent out a release that it had signed Bright to its biggest deal ever. Todays battle for sponsors is more serious then ever, but that only comes with how much is on the lines these days. Slater and Gilmore both up for award

Quiksilver surfers Kelly Slater and Steph Gilmore are both up for the Action Sportsperson of the Year in Laureus World Sports Awards.  The winners will be announced on February 7 in Abu Dhabi.  Tony Hawk is one of 46 members of the Laureus Sports Academy which will choose the winners by casting a secret ballot.

Quiksilver announced today, along with the Association of Surfing Professionals, that the Quiksilver Pro New York will take place on Long Beach in Long Island from September 4-15.  The event will be the 6th stop on the 2011 World Tour, the first ever stop on the East Coast of the US, and will offer a $1 million dollar prize purse- an amount unprecedented in professional surfing.  Read more about the event on the ASP website!

ASP World Tour coming to New York

It was announced today that the ASP World Tour will make a stop on the East Coast in 2011.  The Quiksilver Pro New York will be held in Long Beach, N.Y., from Sept. 4 to 15 and will feature a $1 million prize purse.  "We are beyond excited to host the biggest pro surf event in the world this September in New York," said Bob McKnight, CEO of Quiksilver. "There has always been a huge contingent of dedicated surfers and surf enthusiasts on the East Coast and they will now get a chance to watch the world's best surfers in Long Beach."
